What Happens After the CSS Written Exam: Result, Psych, Viva, and Final Merit

The written result and the final result are two separate announcements, months apart. Here's the real timeline from CE-2024 through CE-2026, and how each stage after the written exam feeds into your final merit position.

What happens after the CSS written exam, in short: qualifying isn't one announcement, it's two, months apart. The written result comes first and only tells you who's still in the race. A separate final result, after psychological assessment and viva voce, comes much later and is what actually determines your merit position and group allocation.

Total Merit15001200 written plus 300 viva

Two results, not one

The most common source of confusion here is treating "the CSS result" as a single event. It isn't. FPSC announces a written result first, which only tells you whether you cleared the 1200-mark written exam. Candidates who pass then go through medical, psychological, and viva voce stages before a second, separate final result names who's actually recommended for appointment. The gap between these two announcements has run anywhere from six to eight months in recent cycles.

CE-2026February 202631 August 2026Pending

For CE-2025, that's roughly six months from exam to written result, then another eight months from written result to final result, about fourteen months total from sitting the papers to knowing your final merit position. CE-2026 is still partway through that same sequence as of this update. CE-2027's confirmed schedule, per FPSC's Advance Public Notice, has the written exam starting 27 January 2027, so its own written result won't be due for months after that.

The written result: what it actually tells you

The written result is a pass or fail on the 1200-mark exam, published as a roll number list on FPSC's official site. It does not include your interview stage or final position, and it doesn't come with a marks breakdown at this point. Passing it only means you move forward, not that your final rank is decided.

For the numbers behind specific cycles, including how CE-2025 and CE-2026 compare, see our CSS 2025 result and pass rate analysis and our CSS 2026 written result guide.

Medical examination: the stage before psychological assessment

Written-qualified candidates go through a medical examination before psychological assessment. This confirms physical fitness for civil service duties and runs on a separate schedule from the written and interview stages. For CE-2026, this stage spans five cities between 21 September and 13 October 2026, each with its own roll number list. See our CSS medical exam schedule guide for your specific centre and date rather than assuming the first date on the list applies to you.

Psychological assessment: the stage between medical and viva

Candidates who clear the medical stage move into psychological assessment before viva voce. This stage evaluates personality traits, behavioral fit, and general suitability for civil service work through written psychological tests, group exercises, and individual sessions. It's a qualifying stage rather than a marks-scoring one, but a poor showing here can stop a candidate before they ever reach the interview panel.

Our full psychological assessment guide covers what to actually expect in each part of this stage, and for the current CE-2026 dates specifically, see the Program 1 2026 psychological assessment schedule.

Viva voce: the last scored stage

Viva voce is the final stage that actually adds marks to your total, worth 300 out of the 1500-mark merit, with a minimum of 100 required to qualify. The panel typically asks about academic background, current affairs, and personal profile, scoring across communication, subject knowledge, personality, and analytical ability.

Our viva voce interview guide breaks down the panel format and how to prepare for each evaluation area, and the current CE-2026 viva voce schedule has the specific dates for this cycle.

Final merit and group allocation

ComponentMarks
Written Exam1200
Viva Voce300
Total Merit1500

Once viva voce is complete, FPSC ranks candidates by combined written and viva marks and allocates them to occupational groups based on that merit position, the preferences each candidate submitted, and how many seats each group actually has that year. A higher merit position improves your odds of getting a top-preference group, but it doesn't guarantee it if that group's seats fill up with higher-ranked candidates first.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CSS written result the same as the final result?

No. The written result only confirms you passed the 1200-mark written exam. The final result comes later, after psychological assessment and viva voce, and is what actually determines your merit position and group allocation.

How long after the written exam is the result announced?

Recent cycles show roughly six months from written exam to written result, then another six to eight months from written result to final result. Exact timing varies by cycle and isn't officially guaranteed.

What happens after you pass the CSS written exam?

You proceed to a medical examination, psychological assessment, and viva voce, in that order, before a final result and group allocation are announced.

How many marks is the CSS viva voce?

300 marks out of a 1500-mark total merit, with a minimum of 100 required to qualify.

How is the final CSS merit list calculated?

Written exam marks (1200) plus viva voce marks (300), for a total of 1500. Candidates are then ranked by that combined score for group allocation.
