Chemistry CSS past papers by year

Start with the most recent paper to see the current style, then work backwards. Older papers remain useful because they show how FPSC has tested thermodynamics, kinetics, organic reactions, coordination chemistry and analytical methods over time.

What the CSS Chemistry paper tests

Each supplied paper is a three-hour, 100-mark examination. Part I contains MCQs worth 20 marks and has a 30-minute limit. Part II carries 80 marks; the instructions require candidates to attempt four written questions, with all questions carrying equal marks. The papers also state that a calculator is allowed.

Physical chemistryThe archive includes thermodynamics, Gibbs free energy, real gases, solutions, chemical equilibrium, kinetics, adsorption and electrochemistry.
Organic and analytical chemistryQuestions cover synthesis, reaction mechanisms, stereochemistry, spectroscopy, chromatography and electrophoresis.
Inorganic and nuclear chemistryPast papers test crystal field theory, coordination compounds, d-block elements, lanthanides, molecular shape and quantum or nuclear concepts.
Important: Chemistry answers need more than memorised definitions. Show equations, conditions, structures, diagrams and short explanations where the question calls for them. That is usually where a basic answer becomes a complete one.
ThermodynamicsGibbs free energy, entropy, equations of state and real-solution behaviour
Kinetics and equilibriumArrhenius equation, reaction rates, equilibrium and common-ion effects
Organic chemistryAlkene synthesis, reaction pathways, isomerism and stereochemistry
Analytical chemistryIR spectroscopy, chromatography, adsorption and electrophoresis
Inorganic chemistryCrystal field theory, coordination chemistry, d-block elements and lanthanides
Physical and quantum conceptsSchrödinger wave equation, photoelectric effect, molecular shape and bonding

How to use CSS Chemistry past papers

Do not begin by solving eleven papers without a plan. Use the archive in three passes.

First, separate MCQs from written questions. Use the 30-minute Part-I limit for quick recall, then give most of your preparation time to the 80-mark written section.

Next, classify the written questions. Mark every question as physical, organic, inorganic or analytical chemistry. Add smaller labels such as thermodynamics, kinetics, spectroscopy or coordination chemistry. This turns the archive into a practical revision checklist.

Finally, practise complete answers. For numerical questions, show the formula and units. For organic questions, draw structures and reaction conditions. For theory questions, define the term and explain its application instead of stopping after one sentence.
